What is The Best Way To Protect Plants From Bugs? Science by Gracie & Dareeya

Our Question: What Is The Best Way To Protect Plants From Slugs?

Materials: Seedlings, Netting, Milk, Egg shells, BambooOur Remedies were: saucer of milk, Netting, Eggshells,Orange Peels. All the remedies worked just as well with zero slugs. The science behind the first remedy is that bugs are drawn to the milk because they are curious and drawn in the milk. The reason why the egg shells worked was because the slugs slide across the sharp ends of the eggshells then get stabbed to death.

Raft Building
Nerves knocked my confidence. With toes lapping the water, I wonder what’s beneath. The raft was slipping away…

Lunging towards me, the ice cold water tries to shove me off. The ravenous water crawls up my leg. We were sinking!

Our last option was to jump. Waiting to just below, the water is ready to be disturbed. A rush of water came above my head. We were under.

Passions

Technology is our focus this term. My passion is to dance so I made a dance inspired photo frame.
I practiced with all natural clay, and did the final with air drying clay. Our idea is to maybe bury or relics somewhere in the school grounds. Our inspiration was when Mrs Strathern went to Pompeii and found lots of relics from thousands of years ago. I had to modify my design by making sure that the back stuck to the front making it stand up.

Production Reflection

It was the day of the results. Eagerly looking , I try to not get my hopes up. Vividly screaming at me, I recognise my name. I had got in.

Practising every day got really tiring, but I kept on going. My nerves knocked my confidence as the dress rehearsal became near. Tickets were already on sale.

My bed was waiting for me. My lines were a blur inside my mind. I fortunately remembered all my lines and cues. The production was nearly over, just the last song to finish up.

Witches

Witches  (By Gracie)
In 1990, Nicolas Roeg directed the film Witches, Roeg based this on the novel Witches written by Roald Dahl (published in 1983). He used many cinematic devices such as close up, tracking, high/low angle shot and wide angle shot in various ways to help the audience understand the film Witches.

Roeg uses the technique close up, a close up is when the camera is focussed on just the one object and the background is blurred.  A close up is also when the camera is focussed on the waist up of a human and only that.  This is used to build tension, to make us feel slightly uncomfortable and also to make us feel as though we are actually there in the film. An example of this in the film is when the grandma first realizes that the cleaner is a witch.

Another technique that Roeg uses is tracking. Tracking is when the camera moves at the same pace as the moving object that it’s  focussed on. An example of this is when the poor baby has been pushed down the slope to the edge of the cliff. The reason why he did this is to build anxiety and to gain suspense.

Roeg uses the High/low angle shot multiple times in the film Witches. He uses this to show who has the power. For instance when the audience looks up at an object, and when the audience is looking down on a object the audience has the power. This is used when the camera looks up at the grand high witch in the meeting.

Wide angle shot is another cinematic technique that Roeg uses in the film. This is used to keep the audience safe and away from danger. For example he uses this at the beginning  of the film to show where the grandma lives and sets the scene.

Many special techniques have been used to create the film Witches. These have been used in specific  ways to help us understand the main message throughout the whole film.

Tree

Waiting waiting just to be seen. Eventually I see the light, realizing  that I am in a wonderful meadow with the deer running about and a rabbit scurrying out of his burrow. Still just a baby, I hope to be as beautiful as my parents one day. Growing each leaf at a time I have a strong trunk. Excitement builds up. I feel a burst inside me. Petal by petal start to form. Finally the thing I've been waiting for, the desire of my life... has bloomed. A flower

Are we doing enough to save our oceans?

On your family holiday, with the sand tickling your toes but suddenly you realize that you can't see the sand you're trudging all over rubbish.  As  you're wondering where it came from you turn your head to look at the ocean.  You’ve found your answer.

Oceans are just too full of rubbish. And here we are ruining our future we need to stop.

One of the main reasons why oceans are so important to Earth and humans is because 70% of Earth is covered in ocean. Alyssa James once wrote “ Oceans are the lifeblood of Earth - if they go we go with them.  Oceans are also a vital component to humans is because a sixth of our diet is related to the ocean.

How would you  feel if you were one of the 100,000 marine mammals that have died, or one of the 90% of seabirds that have eaten rubbish?

In 1975  over 14 billion tons of rubbish was dumped in the ocean. You may think that it is only rubbish that can cause deaths or injury but also pollution, over fishing and worst of all oil spills.

If you are wondering how you could prevent this from happening, here is the answer: Firstly you can use less plastic for example you can use reusable bags instead of plastic. Also you can stop it before it starts by picking up any litter. Of course everybody knows that recycling and composting is helps the environment but did you know that in 2010 they save 85 billion tons of garbage.

So if YOU still want beautiful clean oceans and wonderful sealife than perhaps YOU should  look after our oceans.

Animals

Majestically roaring, the lion strides through the African Plains.

Gleefully waddling, the penguins race across the ice.

Elegantly leaping, the gazelles play in the Savannah.

Hurriedly darting under rocks, the fish hide from danger.

Hungrily lapping their lips, the giraffes scoff down there food.

Timidly fighting, the elephants bash their tusks.

Joyously building their nests, the birds sing their tune.

Learning Conference

I was really nervous at the beginning  although I felt very proud once my learning conference was finished. I was surprised that I ran through my mihi quiet smoothly.  I think that my hard work paid off through out the term. I hope you enjoy.
